Agriculture and the rural economy are an important
component of the overall economy of the Tendring District and
agriculture is the major land use with over 24,000 hectares under
use of which 40% is graded either Class 1 or 2. This is reflected
in cereal, general crops and horticulture being the key sector.
However, as with the national picture there has been a decline in
farm incomes which has led to pressure for diversification into new
areas of activity.
The decline in rural activity has created a series of problems
for residents in terms of employment opportunities, access to
transport to centres of employment, rising house prices creating a
substantial affordability gap. These have all contributed to a
decline in village facilities and the outward migration of younger
people. If these trends are to be changed then there is a need to
support rural activities that allow landowners to diversify into
more sustainable operations including not only rural tourism
projects but also the creation of new businesses utilising existing
redundant buildings. The provision of affordable housing and good
transport links will also be required if the vitality of villages
is to be maintained
The Council aims:-
- To support diversification projects that create employment
opportunities for local people whilst respecting the rural
character and environment
- To ensure that specialist advice and support is available to
encourage economic growth within the rural community
- To encourage the development of market towns and their facilities
to support their immediate rural hinterland
- Provide Broadband and ICT access to rural communities.
- Through the planning system encourage the provision of affordable
housing
- Secure both public and community transport facilities to connect
the rural area with the main urban centres.
A Farmers Guide to Planning has been
produced aimed at helping businesses, organisations and individuals
