The Tendring District Council Rural Settlement List - shown below is a list of settlements within the district. Each settlement has a population of not more than 3,000 on the last day of December before the beginning of each financial year being 1 April.

Businesses that qualify under this scheme will receive 50% mandatory rate relief. Each business must be:

1. The sole general store in the village, provided it has a rateable value of up to £7000;
2. The sole post office in the village, provided it has a rateable value of up to £7000;
3. Any food shop with a rateable value of up to £7000 (catering premises are not included);
4. The sole public house in the village provided it has a rateable value of up to £10,500.
5. The sole petrol station in the village provided it has a rateable value of up to £10,500.

The Council has discretion to give further relief on the remaining bill on such property.

The council may decide to give up to 100% discretionary rate relief to any other business in such a rural settlement, which has a rateable value below £14,000. However, the council must be satisfied that the business is of benefit to the local community and having regard to the interests of its council taxpayers.
