National Non Domestic Rates - Rate Relief for Businesses in Rural Areas - 1 April 2010


The Tendring District Council Rural Settlement List- shown below is a list of settlements within the district. Each settlement has a population of not more than 3,000 on the last day of December before the beginning of each financial year being 1 April.

Businesses that qualify under this scheme will receive 50% mandatory rate relief. Each business must be:

  • A sole shop, general store or post office with a rateable value of up to £8,500
  • Any food shop with a rateable value of up to £8,500 (catering premises are not included)
  • A sole petrol filling station or public house with a rateable value of up to £12,500

The council may decide to give up to 100% discretionary rate relief to any other business in such a rural settlement, which has a rateable value below £16,500. However, the council must be satisfied that the business is of benefit to the local community and having regard to the interests of its council taxpayers.
